Syrian rebels attack air base in the north

BEIRUT (AP) — Rebels attacked a sprawling air base in northern Syria on Wednesday as the opposition expanded its offensive on military airports in an attempt to sideline a major weapon in the hands of President Bashar Assad's forces.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebel assault on the Taftanaz base was preceded by heavy shelling of the area, and the fighters appeared to be trying to storm the facility. Observatory director Rami Abdul-Rahman described the attack as one "of the most intense" on the airfield.
In the past few weeks, Syrian rebels have stepped up their attacks on airports around the neighboring province of Aleppo, trying to chip away at the government's air power, which poses the biggest obstacle to the opposition fighters' advances. As its control of large swaths of territory has slipped over the past year, the government has increasingly relied on its warplanes and helicopters to strike rebel-held areas.
Several past rebel attempts to capture the Taftanaz base have failed.
The Observatory said Syrian army helicopters were helping defend the airfield against the rebel assault. It added that four rebels were killed in the clashes around the base and that one helicopter was hit by rebel fire.
The Observatory said the rebels attacking Taftanaz base included members of Jabhat al-Nusra, which has been branded a terrorist organization by the U.S. and is affiliated with al-Qaida. The group's fighters have been among the most effective on the rebel side in their battle to oust Assad.
On Tuesday, clashes between government troops and rebels forced the international airport in Aleppo to stop all flights in and out of Syria's largest city.
Rebels have been fighting for control of Aleppo since launching an offensive on the city over the summer. The fight over the commercial hub has turned into a bloody stalemate, although rebels have captured large swathes of territory in the surrounding Aleppo province west and north of the city up to the Turkish border.
The rebels have been attacking three other airports in the Aleppo area, including the Mannagh military helicopter base near the Turkish border. They have posted dozens of videos online that appear to show fighters shooting mortars, homemade rockets and sniper rifles at targets inside the bases.
The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said rebels Wednesday bombarded the Mannagh air base, which has been subjected to almost daily attacks since late last month.
The Observatory and the LCC said Syrian army warplanes bombed several Damascus suburbs including Maadamiyeh, where they said there were casualties.
The Observatory also reported that eight shells struck the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk in the capital forcing some of the residents to flee the area that is mostly in the hands of rebels.
Anti-regime activists say more than 45,000 people have been killed since the uprising against Assad began in March 2011. Since then, it has evolved into a full-scale civil war with scores of armed groups across the country fighting regime forces.

Dozens killed, wounded in airstrike near Damascus

BEIRUT (AP) — A Syrian warplane blasted a gas station near Damascus Wednesday, killing and wounding dozens of people and igniting a huge fire in what could be one of the bloodiest attacks in weeks during the 22-month civil war.
Activists said a single Russian-built MiG fighter fired a missile that hit the gas station, setting off an inferno in the eastern suburb of Mleiha. Black smoke billowed from the site. An amateur video posted online showed charred bodies and gruesome carnage at the scene.
Mohammed Saeed, an activist who visited the site, said the missile struck as drivers waited in line with their cars at the station. Syria has been facing a fuel crisis, and people often wait for hours to get gasoline.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human said "tens of people were killed or wounded." At least 10 bodies were seen in an amateur video.
"Many of the people who were there were killed," Saeed said via Skype. "Body parts could be seen on the ground."
He said the missile fired by the MiG warplane caused a crater a meter (three feet) deep.
An amateur video showed several vehicles on fire and a cloud of smoke rising into the air. The videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting on the events depicted.
It was unclear why the Syrian military targeted the gas station. There have been clashes and shelling in nearby areas in the past days.
Saeed said there were two other air raids in the nearby suburbs of Maadamiyeh and Deir al-Asafir.
"Since yesterday the raids have been very intense," Saeed said.

Egyptian officials fly to UAE to discuss arrests

CAIRO (AP) — Two senior Egyptian officials flew to the United Arab Emirates Wednesday to discuss the arrest of 11 Egyptians accused of forming a Muslim Brotherhood cell in the emirate, Cairo airport officials said.
A statement from Egypt's president said one of the envoys, Essam el-Haddad, presidential adviser for foreign affairs and international cooperation, was carrying a letter from President Mohammed Morsi to the UAE President Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Morsi is from the Muslim Brotherhood, which has emerged as Egypt's most powerful political force in the aftermath of the uprising that ousted longtime President Hosni Mubarak nearly two years ago.
The statement did not disclose the contents of the letter. It said el-Haddad will also meet officials in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
All political parties or groups are banned in the tightly controlled UAE.
The UAE's Al-Khaleej newspaper reported Tuesday that the 11 Egyptians were arrested last month after allegedly collecting security information about the UAE, holding secret meetings, recruiting members and sending large amounts of money to Brotherhood leaders in Cairo.
Envoys are expected to discuss relations between the two countries, which have soured after Egyptian presidential candidate and former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq flew to the UAE soon after he narrowly lost to Morsi in Egypt's presidential elections last year.
Litigation against Shafiq followed his departure, with a number of investigations and court cases accusing him of corruption during his long political career under Mubarak.
News media in the two countries reported accusations about alleged conspiracies against each other, including rumors of a plan to kidnap Morsi and take him to the UAE. The rumors peaked when thousands of Egyptians demonstrated in front of Morsi's palace last month, protesting a draft constitution and a presidential decree giving Morsi wider powers.
In September, Dubai's police chief, Lt. Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim, warned of an "international plot" to overthrow the Gulf governments by Islamists inspired by the rise to power of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
The UAE has not faced street protests during Arab Spring upheavals, but authorities have stepped up arrests and pressure on groups including an Islamist organization, Al Islah, accused of undermining the country's ruling system.

Phil Gramm's Proposal to End Wind Subsidies Could Hurt Wind Industry in Texas

Phil Gramm, a former United States senator from Texas and economics professor at Texas A&M, has published a piece in the Wall Street Journal attacking wind power subsidies as a distortion of the energy marketplace.
The ending of that subsidy, in the form of a tax credit, will adversely affect the wind power industry in Texas, according to a recent New York Times article.
Wind power subsidies are costly compared to other forms of energy
Gramm points out in his article that the United States has spent $24 billion since 1992 to encourage the development of a wind power industry in the form of direct spending, tax credits, loan guarantees, and other support. The subsidies cost $52.48 per million watt hours, as opposed to nuclear power at $3.10, hydropower at 84 cents, coal at 64 cents, and natural gas at 63 cents. Wind power also benefits from federal mandates as well as state support.
Wind power subsidies distort the energy market place
The problem, according to Gramm is that supporting costly wind power is displacing other, cheaper forms of energy production, such as natural gas. The subsidies are so high, Gramm suggests, that wind farm owners could actually pay utility companies to buy the electricity they generate and still make money. Additionally, wind power only works when the wind is blowing, causing utility companies that use wind to also have backup sources in case of calm weather.
Wind power in Texas depends on tax credits
The New York Times points out that the wind power industry in Texas depends on the tax credits due to expire at the end of 2012. Texas Republicans such as Sen. John Cornyn and Gov. Rick Perry, who had previously supported the wind power tax credit, are now supporting its abolishment in the name of tax reform. Wind farms have until the end of the year to qualify for the tax credit, should it expire, thus sparking a boom in construction being rushed before the deadline. The tax credit lasts for 10 years.

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) December 27, 2012
The scope of this report is focused on a select 10 companies in the powder metals industry. This is in many ways a selected due diligence of the key companies and drivers in the PM marketplace. An attempt has been made to include top companies in metal powder manufacturing as well as those companies that use powder metal to fabricate components. Also included are descriptions of several up-and-coming global players—companies that appear to have the potential to become major contributors in the PM market.
This report on identifies:

The top 10 major manufacturers of powder metal and other related materials, such as ceramics and nanopowders, special alloys and metal matrix composites, and companies that make parts and components for automotive products, industrial and tolling equipment, recreation and hobby items, appliances, business machines and other products.
It is written with the intent of covering two major segments of the powder metallurgy industry: (1) those companies that manufacture metal powders, and (2) those who use the metal powders to fabricate components.
Also included are descriptions of several up-and-coming global players—companies that appear to have the potential to become major contributors in the PM market.
Powder metallurgy is sometimes referred to as the chipless process, meaning there is nearly zero waste of material. This is due to the absence of machining operations compared to conventional metallurgical methods mentioned earlier. Statistics show that 97% or higher of the input material is retained in the final part. This alone saves the industry huge amounts of money as all conventional metal processing methods result in double-digit waste of material between incoming material and final product.
This focused report profiles the top 10 companies of this industry globally, and provides comments on several transformative changes that are happening in the powder metallurgy industry. The industry as such has a wide range of companies as players—including metal powder manufacturers, part manufacturers, equipment manufacturers, end users and several unique supporting suppliers.
The industry is well developed and mature, and has several global communities, groups, associations and similar organizations that support, campaign for, lobby and market the needs and services of the industry. These range from local clusters to international organizations of various sizes and membership counts. Overall, the industry is estimated to have more than 5,000 companies, not to mention the several thousands of less-established upcoming players.
The powder metallurgy industry caters to a wide range of industries including automotive, aerospace, medical and dental. In the recent years there have also been several new applications for powdered metals such as conductive inks, paints and electronics. This report will explore these application areas in detail.
That report provides a global review of the industry with trends, regulatory aspects and other macro-level factors. In that report, numerous companies are listed in brief along with their region of operation and products. The goal of this document is to provide a more in-depth look at the top-tier companies in the industry and to take a closer look at how the products from these companies are addressed in the market, thus providing an explorative financial and technical review to the readers.
The objectives include identifying companies that are considered the leaders and what technologies or management contributions make them leaders. There are certain market drivers and some constraints to both the companies and to the evolving technology they seek to dominate. There is a desire to ascertain whether these companies will be able to meet the continuing demand for their products by proprietary technology, strategy alliances, superior marketing or other sought-after advantages.
Most of the information presented in this report is based on that available from annual reports, various regulatory filings, company website, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and other public sources, and the author hereby acknowledges the same. Private picture of Mark Zuckerberg's family leaks

Even Mark Zuckerberg's family can get tripped up by Facebook's privacy settings.
A picture Zuckerberg's sister posted on her personal Facebook profile was seen by a marketing director, who then posted the picture to Twitter and her more than 40,000 followers Wednesday.
That didn't sit well with Zuckerberg's sister, Randi, who tweeted at Callie Schweitzer that the picture was meant for friends only. Schweitzer replied by saying the picture popped up on her Facebook news feed.
Randi Zuckerberg eventually said Schweitzer was able to see the picture because they had a mutual friend. Those tweets have since been taken down.
Many people reacted sharply to Randi Zuckerberg, saying that her brother's company makes privacy settings hard to navigate.

Foxconn's Big Improvements Include Chairs, Knitting Classes

The New York Times took a victory lap of sorts, when it published the latest installment of its iEconomy series explaining how Foxconn changed after global outrage over working conditions. In a way, a victory lap is warranted. The Times's series is partially responsible for raising awareness about how badly workers in Foxconn factories, elevating what had previously been rumors on fanboy blogs into Pulitzer bait. Nearly a year after the paper published a jaw-dropping story on the "human costs" of building an iPad, they've circled back to the Foxconn factory floor to find that things have improved, if only slightly.
RELATED: Foxconn Plant Closed After a Massive Brawl Among Workers
Take the case of Pu Xiaolon. Before the mistreatment of Foxconn workers was making headlines, she had to spend 12 or so hours a day inspecting iPads on a rickety wooden stool. Now she has a chair -- with a back. She's also been indulging in the knitting classes that Foxconn started offering a few months ago. These sound like tiny improvements, but it sounds like they're having a big impact on worker morale. Ms. Pu, for instance, doesn't feel as much like a robot any more. "“There was a change this year," she told The Times. "I'm realizing my value."
RELATED: Explosion at Apple Supplier Foxconn Kills Two
Chairs and classes won't solve all of Foxconn's problems, though. It was nearly a year ago that Foxconn claimed to have fixed all of its worker issues, but as the months went by, more reports surfaced of insane overtime hours, student interns being forced to work on the assembly line and The company is still breaking Chinese law by letting its employees work more than 49 hours a week, though it says it can have this resolved by next summer, and student interns are still showing up on Foxconn's factory floor. We haven't heard of suicide pacts, lately, but we haven't heard of Foxconn workers jumping for joy at their wonderful new working lives either.
RELATED: China Thinks It's Apple's Responsibility to Fix Foxconn
As The Times does a good job of expressing, though, Apple is going to have to get involved, if we're really going to see change in how electronics are built. Fat chance. "Apple is scared that if we open the kimono too wide, it will ruin what has made Apple special," said the former Apple official. "But that's the only way to really improve things. If you don't share what you know, then no one else gets a chance to learn from your mistakes and discoveries.
